creative silliness + HP -Halfblood Prince
tonight I got to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince...  (good movie,-too bad they had to leave a lot out and it was still 2 hours long anyway)
Since this is opening week,  we went and saw it at The Marcus Theater at the Crossroads on the big screen They had decorated the hallway into the theater to look more like Hogwarts (cardboard windows,  wall sconces)  which was pretty neat. and there was a small performance put on by the Dalmation Players before the previews ran.  Including a quiz of the audience with prizes.
I won a book... specifically the 'monstrous book of monsters"   a commercially produced  fuzzy foam thing with eyes on the cover, and a tongue hanging out of a maw of teeth   http://www.7gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/monster_book.jpg
When we left the theater, I took the book out of it's plastic bag and  looked at it.. the thing actually DOES open.    And the inside was....

    plain
    yes
    plain.,,,,,,,. BORIngly plain.
Just a swath of gray synthetic fabric devoid  of anything.. not even faux lettering (it IS a book, right?)   But it was still a fun item especially   when used as an impromptu puppet, demanding to be fed : food, paperbacks, silverfish, romance novels,

I noticed that the book appears to be stuffed with some kind of firm, probably closed cell foam..  apparently two rectangular chunks making each side of the book....   And it occured to me that this critter would make a fun cover for a netbook....   I pointed out to a friend 'Hello? high density foam? This would make great protection, i could probably  put a netbook in here and throw it at your head and it wouldn't be hurt at ALL!!

So now the question is... exactly what size is a netbook, and is the Monstrous Monster Book the right size to work? (hey, I can skin a monsterbook. that's almost like the Furby autopsy without the ears)

If a netbook is too big,  it could also be hollowed out to be a solid state data drive,  or some other interesting electronic project (ooo a killer PDA, maybe,  with room for some peripherals or cables)

anyone have any thoughts or ideas on this?

    oil leaks, car stuff
Today after work I hit the autoparts store and got a new PCV valve and put it on the car and got the oil changed. And I thave a new possibility about the oil leak

    Re: the PCV valve
The old one SEEMED OK, it clunked when shaken ,(that's how you check them, you see, if they are gunked up, they won't rattle)  but I wasn't sure that it 'clunked CLEANly. So a replacement was in order,  PCV valves are cheap and easy to replace (at least on my car) . I had a concern that the possible increase in my oil loss might have been due to the valve-  PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventillation (IIRC) which means it releases excess gas/pressure.  I had a similar problem once before and I should have thought of it right away.   Note, this doesn't mean my whole oil leak problem is the valve,- it isn't- there's something else going on.

    Re: Oil change
I took the car to a tire/oil/etc place for the oil change,  it's been needing one for ages now... I half expected that the guy would come in to tell me about (insert name of whichever malady he found) or to comment on the oil leak,   but it was near the end of the day so perhaps he didn't want to delay leaving work, or he just didn't care that much...      So when he didn't, I was a little surprised, I'm sure my  vehicle is a cornucopia of repairs.   I finally asked as I was paying the bill,  if he could tell where the oil leak was... He said he noticed that it was wet around the oil pan , but he hadn't seen anything VERY noticable... but that if I brought it back earlier in the day they might be able to take a little time to look.  (true, gettign an oil change at 7:30 pm this time of year, there's not a lot of daylight out there.)  But it brings up a possibility...
The possibility is that my oil leak is NOT the valve cover... it may be the oil pan.... And it makes a certain amount of sense...  yeah, it's a little damp around the valve cover.. but at the rate I've been losing oil,    the whole outside of the engine would be a LOT more coated... and I don't smell much, and it doesn't smoke ... the oil pan is down low, if it's squeezing out under pressure (when the engine runs) it's going to drop down onto the road, and maybe some onto the exhaust...  but I sure don't leave an oil cloud behind me... I know there's a lot of places where a car can lose oik from, but the pan seems a likely suspect...... (The front and rear seals on the engine are not more than 3 years old... (front was december 2006 - rear was tranny change in - august? 2007) I Know the engine isn't burning it.....

Ah well,  I just need to figure out how to rig an oil IV for the car,   why don't these things have something like this already?  I mean, Geeze, you have a radiator thingy.. why not one for something as important as oil?

valentine's day, and how some people feel about it
I'M quoting someone's away message on AIMchat:

    " Even when I have a girlfriend
Even when I'm nowhere near as bitter as I once was
Even when I'm a graduated responsible adult who has to watch his language in a corporate setting
For all of you, my olds friends among the dejected and rejected, I'll say it one more time:
I fucking hate this fucking day."

I'm not sure if I feel that way or not, but all the damned lead-in commercials for jewelry and stuff that implicates you are a complete hose beast if you didn't get your sweetie something, I find a bit revolting

The above quoted individual is noted for his creative and humorous away messages, (and his stories aren't bad either, what I've seen of them)
on AIMchat you'll find him at "piromonkeyac"

Now, he has a girlfriend, which means he has the POSSIBILITY of doing something special with her today, which is nice. But what about all you folks who don't have, or have broken up, with their sweeties recently? Another friend of mine learned two weeks ago that the person he's been seeing decided that their relationship wasn't on hold, it was back to friends (which is better than nothing, but anyone can tell you that it's a bit bitter) I worry for him, he's a good person, and a sweet man.

There is so much hype on lovers and love on this day that I have to wonder what it does to people who would want to celebrate it, but don't have someone to celebrate it with.

Is it fair to say 'Happy Valentine's Day' to the world at large?

    cars
yah know... Cars can have personalities.... Right now my regular car is down with radiator problems, and I plan to get it into the shop soon. but until then I'm driving my backup car...

My backup car isn't much, it's this old tiny little thing, a rattletrap, I got it from my mom for free (of course it THEN had a whopping repair bill a few months later).. I've discovered that rain leaks into the trunk ( mom kept it under a roof and didn't know) if you top off the tank, some gas leaks out (I think it's a hole in the vent tube) It leaks oil, ( a legacy from the repairs I think) but passes E-check.. the driver's side seat belt buckle sometimes sticks, and the speedometer needle is bent and drags on the dial (so it doesn't read true) The muffler fell off several months ago, I chucked it into the trunk and didn't notice a difference in how the car sounds.

It's my determination to put as little money into this bucket as possible, I might attempt some repairs myself in the warmer weather (with experienced direction) and I may attempt to teach myself some body work by repairing the rust spots. The car is basically not worth much, I've thought about turning it into an ART car...

But yah know what? That little piece of tin starts and runs, and it goes where I need it to, It's so small that It can fit almost anywhere... When my regular car blocked the driveway, the backup just went UP over the grass and around it.... These past few days I've been driving it in this horrible weather, I was out on sunday night on the highway where few other cars dared... If I had to describe this little car, I would call it 'plucky' IN the past I've called the car 'The Mosquito", since it was tiny, and not much more than legs that got you around (like the insect)... But I have to say that name, while descriptive, didn't quite fit right on the car.... I never got stuck in the snow, and only rarely had trouble with controlling the car.... the little thing just goes.. I don't doubt that I could get stuck in snow or mud if I was careless, but it didn't happen...

So the car's name is Courage

I haven't made any public posts in a while... Let's see, what has been happening in my life?
I've had a vacation, and various troubles at work, I'm not dating anyone (or have I already mentioned that?) a friend of mine is going on dayshift, I've found out about some just WRONG rumors that were being spread about me a couple years ago, and a friend of mine had his old cat put to sleep.....
I mowed the lawn because it really needed it, and the person who said they would keep the lawn mowed hasn't (but to be fair, we'd had a lot of rain and that made it hard to find a day where it could be done.

All in all... life keeps ticking away I suppose...
Anywho.. It's morning and I'll have to be scooting off soon.

life the universe and fresh fish
well.. I don't post much, do I? I went to a LJ meet on Wed. that was pretty neat, but it was in a noisy area so you couldn't really hear everything going on... It was NEAT though...

Last friday I got my review at work... Bah, I'd like to see my boss do a review that actually applied to my job instead of something pulled out of some damned management book... oh yeah.. and the monday two weeks before that I got 'implicated' in sexual harassment!

Life is an interesting thing, I must say.... (GRIN)

How many people out there are truely happy with their jobs, I wonder? There is a lot about my job that I like, but I complain anyway...

I should go get a job on a blimp crew like another LJ member.. That just sounds INTERESTING, even if it ends up being boring, I mean, how many folks can say they have worked with blimps?

Of course I guess I could also be a Bull Semen collector (no shit this is a real job) a long time ago I remember hearing that that was one of the best paying hourly jobs out there... OF course you must ask yourself, would you TELL anyone about your job?

In the realm of 'self employment'. What about that Bambi Hunting thing that was in the news? If you were a woman, would you let people shoot at you with paint ball guns for a guaranteed, thousand per hunt? (at a couple hunts a week you could make some good money) At what time will all the man-hating lesbians and feminazis demand Buck Hunts for women? I bet the women won't aim for the chest, either.

It's an interesting thought.. What things would you be willing to do on a regular basis for money?
